I believe this to be an accurate history of NWM, and its relationship to HK/Rheinmetall:
Dutch firm (NWM/Nederlandse Wapen en Munitiefabrik) acquires production rights outside of Spain (June, 1957) .
NWM transfers production rights to Rheinmetall and HK in exchange for a 20mm ammunition (agreement January, 1958; finalized February 4, 1959) .
HK awarded first contract for 150,000 G3’s (January, 1959); Rheinmetall awarded a similar contract thereafter.
a) Rheinmetall produced 500,000 G3’s- @ 8,000/month (1960's)
HK had technical lead on G3 project, so Rheinmetall engineers made no improvements or modifications, and continued to use wooden furniture, even when HK converted to plastic furniture.
Rheinmetall transfers production rights to HK (1969).
West German government cedes ownership of production rights to HK (1977).
