Up for sale is Pre Ban 1965 Colt AR15 Model SP1 .223 Rifle Package.
Make: Colt
Model: AR15 SP1
Serial Number: SER. SP 02678
Year of Manufacture: 1965

Purchased this vintage AR15 rifle back in 1979 to keep my other AR15's company.
Seldom if hardly used, back of the safe it went. It became an "old" Safe Queen rifle over the years.
Kept in minty condition .223 snake cleaned, property lubricated, muzzle capped in dust free safe.
Periodically checked and maintained during my "Man Cave Years" of "ooohing & aaahing" pistol/rifle handling sessions.

This is an outstanding "Second Year" 1965 production Colt AR-15 SP1 semi-automatic rifle.
Markings: Left side of receiver marked “COLT AR-15 CAL. .223 MODEL SP1 SER. SP 02678 with the Rampant Colt logo.
Marked on left side receiver behind bolt catch “COLT’S PATENT FIREARMS HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A. MFG.CO and
Marked with safe and fire.

It has the early style upper receiver and the correct early Colt "triangle" proof mark on the upper receiver.
The finish is original and in excellent condition with only minor surface scuffing.
The lower receiver has the Colt four line markings with the digit serial number, Serial Number SP 02678.
It is fitted with the early original Colt marked parts such as the original non-chrome lined barrel with an "s" & "12" markings.
The barrel is fitted with the early three-prong flash hider with correct checkered lock washer. It has the early commercial
Colt bolt carrier that lacks the notching on the side, later added for the forward assist.

The Type 1 lower receiver has the roll pin hole at the rear and the '+' symbol cast mark on the right side front. It is fitted with the early original parts including the original non-chrome lined Winchester barrel having only a small "M" mark and proof mark between the front sight post rings on the right side. The bolt has the early Colt version that is all chrome plated with the acid etched 'M' and 'P' markings, flat headed firing pin and flat edge carrier firing pin retaining pin.
Rifle retains its original internal parts with the early style selector switch that has the small machined hole on each end of the switch
and retains its original first generation (and very rare) old style, large head pivot screw.
The buffer is a two-piece 'Edgewater' recoil buffer assembly. It is also fitted with its original slimmer black plastic pistol grip, early triangular handguards (early unmarked versions lacking the "R" and "L" on the inner aluminum shields.)
The buttstock is indeed the early version that lacks any provisions for the internal storage compartment.
Buttstock is correctly fitted with a solid rubber/plastic butt plate with no provisions for the later trap door.
It also has the rubber coated swinging sling swivel.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Excellent 1965 production Curio & Relic Pre-Ban Colt AR-15 SP1 Semi-Automatic Rifle Overall Condition, this rifle retains about 97-98% of original finish. The markings are clear. Furniture is all in very good condition.
Rifle rates are about very good to fine condition. A collectible of collectables, this SP1 is not only a very early run of the iconic SP1 rifle, it’s also in very good condition having been properly maintained and cared for over the past 47 years of its lifetime with me.
This AR-15 SP1 qualifies as a Curio & Relic per ATF rules.
