The family will be taking a trip to Yellowstone later this year and I am contemplating taking my pistol. I have never taken a flight with a weapon as a civilian, only while in the military.

I understand the basics that it has to be in a locked case, unloaded, and the ammo in its own box or case. The question I have for those of you that have flown with a pistol is, did you put the case inside of your checked baggage (suitcase), or did you check the pistol case as a separate item when checking in.

My permit has reciprocity in the states we will be traveling.

Thanks in advance.

I would reach out to the airline and get the exact details from them.
After it was inspected, It was locked in an approved case and tagged by the airline. I then put it in my locked and checked luggage which was also tagged.
I had to claim my suitcase at the baggage claim desk.
Also, I was allowed to store my ammo in the same firearm lock box.
I only did it once about 8 years ago, so stuff may have changed.

Double check this on me.....but I don't think you can legally take/carry a firearm into a park???
Aside from that....what "they" ^^^^^^said.

You can carry it - but don't use it ;)

Also, don't possess inside any govt. building or visitor center while visiting.

Thanks to everyone for the info and advice. I did check the Yellowstone firearms rules and as stated above is legal.
