Just has how the SA80 became a HK project when they took over RSAF Nottingham/Royal Ordinance, the became responsible for up keep and new manufacture of the L7A2 GPMG, which is the FN MAG as built in Britain. This lead HK to develop their own version of the MAG for possible offer to the German Army and French Army known as the HK221. France with the actual FN MAG and Germany adopted the HK MG5. But the HK221 gave it's buttstock and heatsheild design to the MG5 and the L7 flash hider was used on the G28 sniper rifle from HK.
