Everyone who enlists signs a blank check payable to Uncle Sam, "for any amount up to and including my life". People forget that service members die in training in peacetime as well. That is the price of readiness. What I would like to see is an end to this practice of sending boots to ground that we don't need to be on. We have plenty of ways of ruining the lives of those who oppose us without doing that. "Fight smarter". Some General's career should be the last reason we do anything.
