I rescued my first Husky [Lucretia/Lucy], around 89-90. She was a white one, and about 6 months old. I learned the hard way,,,,what a challenge Huskies are. She was an incredible and loyal friend, and my friends still talk about her. She lived to almost 18. I could do an hour on what she taught me about Huskies. She was smarter than half the people she was ever around. She made people do things she wanted....just for fun.

Then I moved into my girlfriend's place, and we rescued our first red one [Haley]. She was completely different from the white one, but just as Wonderful. She came from being on a short chain and chewing rocks[boredom] to having a sister and free to run the yard. she lived to almost 16. Lost her to a brain- aneurysm. The reds seem more loving, and seem more maternal instinctually.

We bought a new home, and the pack grew. Someone had dumped a show-dog picture, black-white male on our road [happens all the time], and the neighbor called us about one of our dogs trying to killed his caged rabbits. I told him it wasn't ours,, but retrieved him. We tried for 6 months to find his home...but now he was ours too. We kept calling him"Bud" during that time, and the name stuck. Buddy-Lee/Budlee. He lived to 12. An auto-immune illness killed him. The two girls had died, and he was devastated. We had 3 in the time-period.

So...I had to fiend a new pack-member for my grieving/lonesome guy. I drove 4 hours each-way, to Cheboygan Mi. in a blizzard, to rescue a Husky outta their pound. She was dumped at 8 years old.[grrr] When I got there, I found they had kinda fibbed about her being a "Husky". I couldn't leave her there, and I brought "Trinity/Trinny" home. Bud instantly was relaxed and loved her. She had a major $8K surgery at 12 years old, and lived to be 18. She was an amazing dog. It was an intentional mix of Spitz and Husky on the maternal side, and a Heinz-57 on the paternal side[oops]. Some sly male got-some. [DNA tested] If I could replicate her entirely, I would. She was a perfect mix of dog. The only thing about her that shocked me....was her hatred of cats. She ran/blew right thru our 6ft chain-link fence to get a cat. She got it. I witnessed this, and was totally freaked out. She was so fast and a big girl. The fence just lifted/stretched right over her.

Shortly after getting Trinny into the new-pack, I wanted another red one. I drove 3 hours each way into another snow storm, to Rescue "Sonya ["Red Sonya"/Russian]. She was a mess. Kennel cough, intestinal parasites, severely malnourished. When I took her to get fixed, they did an x-ray on her. She's full of bird-shot from head to tail. She adores me, is the happiest Husky/dog I've ever experienced, and I'm the only one who can put 2 hands on her. She's 18 now, and acts like 4-5. Absolutely, our wild-child. We now had 3 in our pack, again.

So.....My wife/Rhonda calls me from work, and tells me a guy she works with, is holding a Husky puppy that he can't keep. It's pestering the hell out of his Boxer. He had saved it from going to the pound, from a family losing their house...and they had just rescued it. Anyhow, this guy brings out a black/white 10 month old puppy to meet our dogs. She's very smart, and starts kissin' up to me. Needless to say, we now have four Huskies. Sara/Bear, turns out to be a lot like Lucy, and carves a huge spot into my heart. Hard to believe we were her fourth home in 10 months. She also got hit by a car. She's Daddy's girl. Unfortunately, [I'm crying as I type] we lost her a couple months ago. She had been getting heavier, and not as active....but no signs of discomfort. Anyways, she eventually starts having issues, and we take her in for a "fairly-simple" surgery. When they x-ray her, they find a large tumor on her heart [inoperable]...and we decide to say goodbye to my Bear. She was 13.

During our period of our pack of 4, we loose Budlee, and my wife seems better with the smaller number. Of course I get a phone-call from a good friend about another male, who's going to the pound. He'd been rescued from one, and the woman whom this dog emotionally latched onto...died of cancer. Her husband [a dick] ignored this heart-broken giant Husky, and was gonna dump him back at the pound. I went and got him [not a popular act with the wife]...and we're back to four. It's funny, cause he's a mama's-boy. "Jake" is a pedigree black/white male, who goes at 85 lbs. That really big for a Husky. [normal is 35-60] He's a big lover, but has many emotional issues. He's scared of the sight and sound of actions of firearms, and any weird noise. He also has never liked to share anything. He's our "special child", and is currently 13 years old. We got him at six, and he still has many quirks.

So....30+ years later, we currently have 2 senior Huskies ...Sonya and Jake. [18 and 13] and have so many fond and loving memories of our Fuzzy-Kids. There are so many pissed-off and scary moments in there.....but I can't picture myself without a Husky. The "pack thing" has kept them coming. I try to deter people from getting Huskies, as they are very seldom what people think they are. Not watch-dogs [hardly bark], escape artists, always trying to be the alpha[never seen more pack mentality], destructive when lonely, shed hair/fur 24-7-365, generally high energy when young, most have an insane prey-drive[anything in the yard that's not a dog...is dead], and can be biters when annoyed-teased by kids. In the end, so many pay the ultimate price once they're abandoned. That beauty, has a high price. Our yard has 6ft fence with coyote-rollers on top, all gaps sealed up, and Jake made us get an invisible fence, besides the other stuff. Too smart and born to run.
This is longer than I wanted to post....but here's some various pics of our ever-changing pack and fuzzy-kids.

Oh, and a weird thing. These dogs seem to find each-other. We've had several of them "show-up" at our different homes, over the years. They're dogs that got loose and ended up trying to get with ours. A couple had run/investigating well over over 10 miles in a day, and ended up trying to get with ours. Weird stuff. Coincidence.....maybe. But other breeds haven't shown up. We found all their homes, except for Budlee. He found his home.

Awesome stories and pictures. ;)

Tony

Thank you. These fuzzy-kids, have always meant more to me than any "thing" I've ever had. I truly believe dogs are God's greatest work. More love and loyalty, than most humans deserve.

Tweaked it some. ;)

Got married in August. She's a former ARMY MP, born/raised in Indiana, and unlike my red-headed, Long Island, N.Y. ass.... she knows how to dress deer, pheasant and knows what squirrel tastes like. The screen saver on her phone is STILL her beloved TOBY, 18 month prison trained service GOLDEN who failed his 'final exam' for " Not a strong-enough work ethic " and too much playfulness. She moons about him constantly. I've given her carte blanche' to bring home a furry kid. @MMissile I am sure it is just a matter of time. I've asked if she wants AKC puppy and the look of indignation on her face froze my blood. It will be a rescue. I'm cool with that. As many here will agree....most days I like animals more than people.

You've got a good woman. Just a FYI. Animal rescue leagues already have their animals outta the kill-cycle, and can be very controlling. If you truly want to rescue an animal....Petfinder.com, and look at the pounds and shelters. They have no choice, but to destroy unwanted animals. Most are perfectly good, healthy and loving. Just in a horrible place.

Merry Christmas....Mike.

Thanks,
But I dont think my beautiful bride is quite ready yet. Bullet was our first dog and truly amazing. My wife was/ is devastated over his departure. We buried him in the back yard and she planted an Olive tree next to his grave. She is an early riser and every morning she is out there chatting with him.
I think we will eventually, but it may take some time.

Your wife is truly amazing AND you definitely married “UP” !!!
Tell her Mohamed and Bibi said Merry Christmas and we are looking forward to meeting again for that promised BBQ and range time!!!!

We have two rescue cats. The first was only about 2-3 weeks old and the only survivor of a litter that got drowned in a ditch during a rain. Mother wouldn't have anything to do with it for some reason. So we took her in and had to bottle feed her for the next month. She made it and we've had her now for about 12+ years. She went from small enough to sleep in the palm of your hand to a plump 17 lbs. Fat and happy :) And she's the friendliest cat I've ever seen.

The second we've had now for close to four years. I was on my way to work one early morning and this kitten came up to me meowing. I went back in and got her some food and water and went to work. That must have made an impression on her. A week or so later we were all in the backyard and heard meowing again and it was her in the wood pile curled up (it was cold). Well, we took her in and then got her all fixed up at the vets. She's been my 'kitty' ever since. She follows me from room to room, used to wait a the door when I got home from work, beats me to the bed at night and curls up next to me and even use to play fetch.

Two great cats with cool personalities.

I look forward to that MO. When your can gets out of jail in P.S.L., you'll have to come down here (another 45 minutes South) and the 100 yd. range ought to be finished in the backyard by then !
