The purpose of this thread is to aggregate info about H&K pistol mods and conversions that are verboten! This thread is intended to be all in good fun, and potentially we might even gain some interesting knowledge from it, even if that is only a list of things not to do. ;)

My Outlook for This Thread

Some of the impetus for this thread is my own annoyance with people on other forums that call themselves enthusiasts, but frown upon "unapproved" or non-stock / non-OEM modifications. I'm not talking about anyone here, but rather some on certain other forums... I'm also not talking about things we might all relatively agree are tasteless modifications.

If you consider yourself a "purist" because you prefer H&K's in stock form, or enjoy the provenance and accuracy of "numbers-matching" or perfectly replicating stock configuration... this is not a dig at you either! I am a die-hard H&K enthusiast and understand the enjoyment people get out of those types of collection activities. I especially understand the draw for that considering the sheer variety of configurations the company has produced, as well as the obscurity of some of them which drives the WANT factor through the roof! I fully appreciate the enjoyment fellow enthusiasts find in that niche.

My opinion is that life can be far more fun and interesting without ragging on people's attempts to experiment and see what's possible. So feel free to post your mods and conversions. That could be:
  • Caliber conversions
  • Frame and slide swaps
  • Red dot slide cuts
  • Stipple jobs

Disclaimer

We're just having fun here, so do your own due diligence! Don't assume any of these mods are even a good idea or will not adversely affect durability and reliability! Bonus points for caliper measurements, torture tests, and other hard data! There are a few of these frame and slide swaps I do plan to test more extensively myself, as there's a few combinations I'm considering for more serious use if they seem to perform fine. We're all adults here, and I certainly hope the feedback will be constructive (good and bad) as opposed to the mindless rants I've seen on certain other sites.

Frame & Slide Swaps

To start off with, here are a few conversions that have been on my mind lately. I heard awhile back that some of the major parts are interchangeable between the USP Compact (40 or 9), P2000, and P30. Many of the internals are, but I'm specifically talking about slides and frames. I haven't 100% liked the grip of the P30, so I was wondering about swapping slides and frames between some of these. I'm highly interested to see whether some of these other combos are possible or not, and may try some of them later this year once I acquire a few more H&Ks:

  • HK45C slide on USP45 Compact frame (Seen pics from another forum, seems possible)
  • P2000 slide on USP9 Compact frame (I am VERY interested in this)
  • P30 slide on USP9 Compact frame
  • P30L slide on USP9 full size frame (I'm guessing this will not work)
  • P30SK slide on P2000SK frame (Someone on another forum said they've done this)
  • P2000SK slide on P30SK frame

I can legitimately see a few of these offering more tangible improvements. For example, as we all well know, USPs have seriously beefy slides. Judging by weight differences in several models, there might be a weight reduction in a combo like a P2000 slide on a USP Compact frame. Assuming this even works, seems like potentially a ~2-3oz reduction for the 9mm or 40s&w models, but that is just a guess.

Generally, many of the USP and P or HK45 variants seem to have the same or very close to the same placement and dimensions of the critical components in the slide and frame that interface with each other. For example:

  • Firing pin safety
  • Extractor hook
  • Ejector
  • Pins in the slide
  • Slide release lever (Some differences in shape, but placement appears the same or similar between equivalent models like P30 vs P2000, or P30SK vs P2000SK)

Obviously most critical is going to be ensuring proper barrel lockup, all factory safety features still being retained, no possibility of firing out of battery, etc. Anyways, here's a few teaser pics to get the ball rolling, with more to come soon as I find time to take caliper measurements, compare components like recoil spring assemblies, etc. Please excuse the terrible image quality. This was rushed since I was excited tonight after picking up the USP9C @Guyanaman1963 graciously shared on the "Found a Deal" section.

Component & Configuration Weights
The below are all 9mm slides and frames. No magazines were included in these weights. All ambidextrous guns have had their right side slide release levers removed as I do not use them and am not a fan of HK's solution for them. All guns are using OEM barrels.

Weights were taken with a digital scale showing a deviation of -0.033 to +0.076 ounces, with an average deviation of 0.041 ounces. For all of these configurations, including some of my non-standard modifications, the maximum difference in weight seen was approximately 1.12oz which is negligible at best. Weight isn't really a factor or consideration I'd worry about here.

The USP Compact example used is a bone stock V1 with factory three dot sights.

The P2000 DA/SA example used is a V3 with a GGI trigger job, which includes NP3 coated internals and an XL backstrap. The P2000 LEM example is a converted V3 with a GGI SRT kit and a Medium backstrap. The P2000 slide example is stock with Meprolight tritium sights.

The P30 example is a V1 LEM with a 4.1ch + GGI SRT kit, GGI flat trigger, Medium backstrap, Large side panels, Trijicon fiber rear sight, and Heinie tritium front sight, and factory slim/short slide release lever.

P30 Slide on P2000 Frame (P2000L)

So far, this configuration appears to function in dry fire. The trigger successfully trips the sear and releases the hammer in both LEM, DA, and SA configurations. Looking at the underside of the P2K vs. P30 slides, both appear to have the same size, shape, and position of relief cut underneath on the right side (extractor side). It appears this surface might be critical for ensuring proper function of either one or several of: disconnector, trigger bar, or control latch. Further dry testing will be performed before I test this live, but things look promising so far.

Henceforth in this thread I'll refer to this as the "P2000L", unless someone has a better nickname.

Revising my initial thoughts, with a fully-loaded 13rd mag, this configuration does not feel nose-heavy or out of balance. At least not appreciably that I could tell after quickly handling it. One potential benefit of this combo is the increased number of aftermarket sight options for the P30 slide. Also, if you prefer forward slide serrations, then you'll get an ergonomic and functional improvement.

For this combo to fit together, the config is using a P30 slide and barrel with a P2000 recoil spring assembly. The reason for the P2000 RSA is due to the P2K having a removable slide release lever, whereas the P30's is captured in the frame. The P30's guide rod has different cuts and grooves in its rear portion and is not compatible with the P2000 slide release lever.

More pics to follow, including things like differences in recoil spring assemblies, measurements of dimension and placement of the critical surfaces within the slide and frame, etc.

P2000 Slide on P30 Frame (P30C)

I'm dubbing this one the "P30C". The frame dust cover protrudes past the slide only a small amount. If you wanted, you could certainly dremel the protruding portion off with likely no detrimental effect. Doing so, you wouldn't even be reaching the metal serial number insert, so no worries there. The downside of this combo is a reduced number of aftermarket sight options. If your preferred sights are already available for the P2000 slide, this may be a non-issue for you. Also, lack of forward slide serrations, if that's an issue for you. While for most people there is no practical difference in concealability, there may be a small improvement in weight distribution and reduction in overall weight. Just a guess, but I'd imagine that difference is superficial at best, and probably not a deciding factor for this swap.

Considering the cost involved in acquiring a P2000 slide, I'm sure most will find it hard or impossible to justify this. This is a bit of a Glock G45-style combo, and if you have large hands and find the P2000 just a bit too short for comfort, this frankenstein concoction might be worth considering. Though, same as with the P2000L "blasphemy", you really have to ask yourself is the juice worth the squeeze with either of these? If you can't measure the difference on the shot timer, or some other tangible improvement, I'd probably say no. For some, the difference in recoil characteristics of a shorter and lighter slide cycling faster might actually be desired. Aesthetics or ergonomics are another story. You do you boo boo!

P2000 Slide on USP Compact Frame (USP2000C)

So far, this configuration does NOT function. The issue seen is the trigger does not trip the sear and release the hammer in either DA or SA mode. I have not definitively determined why. I suspect it is an issue with a relief cut on the right side (extractor side) of the underside of the P2K slide that is not present on the USPC slide. I suspect this is somehow manipulating the angle of the trigger bar, depression of the disconnector, or articulation of the control latch. It's late and I'm going brain dead, but I'm fairly certain the issue is related to one or several of those components in relation to surfaces on the underside of the slide.

I'm dubbing this one the "USP2000C". The P2000 slide is lighter, but by only by approximately 0.5oz. I feel like this apparent reduced weight strikes a much better balance with the USP Compact frame, even if the difference sounds small. It's probably a matter of weight distribution with less weight higher on the slide due to the increased angle of the side bevel on the P2000 slide.

One of the things that served as an impetus for me to experiment with this combo was a performance issue I have with the P30, albeit probably a minor one in the grand scheme of things. Namely, erratic tracking of the slide in recoil, particularly when shooting at speed. In a perfect world, when shooting at speed the slide would track consistently straight up and down in recoil and perfectly return to your original point of aim. Of course, much shooting technique is involved in achieving this. Sometimes the physical characteristics of the gun can contribute to making that easier or more difficult.

In the case of the P30, for me I've found that the shape of the spiderman grip, particularly due to the rounded contours in certain positions, often leads me to less of a straight recoil arc, and more of a figure 8-shaped arc with the gun tracking slightly to the side. Best I can figure, I think it's due to my inconsistent grip pressure across a curved surface. Hence the interest in bringing the USP or USP Compact into the equation due to the blocky grip. People may see the squarish grip as less-desirable, and I get that. I also see it as potentially more consistent, but that is merely a hypothesis and I am precisely an N of ONE in this test group. ;) So YMMV and this may or may not apply to anyone else.

For this combo to fit together, the config is using a P2000 slide and barrel with a P2000 recoil spring assembly. The reason for the P2000 RSA is it has a groove on the rear portion which locks on to the barrel whereas the USP Compact RSA does not have this groove. The USP Compact RSA looks nearly identical in size and shape, appears to work with the P2K barrel, but is not captured. The rod portion itself is actually shorter than the P2K RSA by a small amount (a few millimeters Consider this portion in need of further explanation, pictures, and more testing. I experimented briefly and definitely found a few differences I want to examine in more depth before I test this combo. So this is merely an initial test fit to see if the slide fits on the frame, locks in place with the USP Compact slide release lever, cycles by hand fully, and locks open with the slide release lever. Initially, things are looking promising in that regard.

Pics to follow, including close-up pics to better show the difference in slide profile as viewed from the back or other interesting angles I can find.

USP Compact Slide on P30 Frame (P30PC)

I'm dubbing this the "P30PC" to be consistent with the others, though I'm open to suggestions since that one sounds a bit weird. This is probably a config that doesn't need to happen and, as far as I can tell initially, probably offers no real value whatsoever. The overhang of the dustcover appears to be the same as the P30C combo, or very close to that. Specific measurements and close-up pictures to follow.

For this combo to work, the config is using a USP9 Compact slide and barrel with a P30 recoil spring assembly. The reason for the P30 RSA is the same reason as the P30C combo above due to the P30's captured slide release lever.

P30 Slide on USP Compact Frame (USP30C)

I will test further, but unfortunately things don't look optimistic at this point.

Just like with the P2000L combo, with a fully-loaded mag it actually balances fairly well, feels good, and I'm quite liking the improved ergonomics and aftermarket support of the P30 slide on this frame. There is a bit of slide overhang, which I will get close-up pictures of soon. However, there is no open area to worry about with any exposed recoil spring assembly or anything like that.

For this combo to fit together, the config is using a P30 slide and barrel with a P2000 recoil spring assembly. The reason for the P2000 RSA is the same as the USP2000C combo above. USP Compact Slide on P2000 Frame (P2000PC)

I'm dubbing this one the "P2000PC". Again, like with the P30PC, I'm open to suggestions for a different name. Ideally these should all have a consistent naming convention so there's less confusion if people ever end up talking about this insanity of my own creation. ;)

Initially, the ONLY reasons I can think of this combo being remotely worth considering are the wider aftermarket sight availability and possibly some minuscule reduction in recoil or change in the characteristics of the recoil impulse due to my current estimate of probably a ~2-4oz increase in slide weight. I will weigh the differences between all of these combos soon and update ALL posts accordingly.

The posts have been updated and a table of configuration and component weights has been added to the first post. So far, weight differences are a negligible factor barely worth mentioning (~1oz max). I initially thought it might be more like 2-4oz, but it appears slight modifications are at best good for ~1oz change in weight between these configs.

The unfortunate finding I have so far is that it appears the P2000 and P30 slides will not allow the USPC frames to function properly. Either of those configs results in the trigger not tripping the sear and not releasing the hammer. Those slides can fit, and most of the surfaces, placement of components, etc. appear to be VERY close or the same, however there are some minor differences. The P2K and P30 slides have a shallow relief cut on their undersides, on the right side (extractor side). I'm not 100% sure yet, and will still give those configurations further examination, however it appears the lack of that relief cut on the USPC slide means that the P2K and P30 slides are either restricting movement or allowing abnormal movement of what I suspect to be one or several of the following components:
  • Trigger bar
  • Disconnector
  • Control Latch
What is promising is the "P2000L" configuration (P2K frame, P30 slide) passed a dry function check on 2 frames in either LEM, DA, or SA modes. I'll be dry testing, measuring and examining it quite a bit more before I'm confident things are ready for live testing. If it does end up working, that could make for a nice enhancement for those that prefer forward cocking serrations, want additional sight options, and that might want their P2K slide to match their P30 configuration (e.g. same sights, sight radius and regulation, ergos, etc.).

Many more pics and measurements to come. Sorry about the delay, work is pretty nuts right now.
 
I'm curious, what about a complete P2000 slide on a P8A1 frame? is the frame too long?

Just to be sure, I checked a P2000 slide with my USP9 frame. It won't work. The breech face on the P2000 sits farther back, which puts the barrel and locking lugs in a different position. The P2000 slide does fit on the frame rails and slides on ~90% of the way but, then either the barrel or the recoil spring assembly starts to interfere.

Also, there's no way the USP FS recoil spring assembly will fit the P2000 slide.
