WHICH HK 308 rifle is the one you choose?

Just joined after seeing a post on sturmgewehr about this new site. I've been on hkpro for over or around 20 years. Since the days of hk91.com first as kletzenklueffer then solgardener. So new site and new username.

To answer the question in OP, I've had a G3 type for 30 years. It is my favorite firearm of all time. A couple years ago it got company in the way of a Z5RS that I form 1'd into an sbr, and just yesterday picked up Z43P to round out the gang.

Glad you saw the notice, and acted wisely. :ROFLMAO:
The latter name I remember well. ;)

I really loved my HK SR9 in a TC configuration. It was extremely accurate and a joy to shoot. I did however recently sell it for three reasons. It destroyed the brass every single time so precision reloading was just not possible. The second reason was I decided not to keep anything other than shotguns that were not suppressor ready and it would have been a crime to thread that barrel even though I have to admit that I was tempted. The third reason is I only had two weapons in 308 and I decided to abandon that caliber for continued pursuit of caliber consolidation and downsizing of my collection for political reasons. I do miss seeing it in my display but reasons are reasons.

I have the same setup....and it sits on display at my FF"s shop. I have 4 rifles on display there. The MSG is just broken-in, I've never shot the SR9, it's been years since I shot the MM11, and maybe 15....since firing the SIG 540. They're kinda outta-site, outta mind.

That one would have been hard for me to get rid of, but I understand.

Tony, it was made easier by the fact I have the exact same setup on my PSG93. Basically it is a HK 93 but it is setup like a SR9 in TC configuration with a PSG1 trigger group with wooden grip and a PSG1 stock. It is just like my SR9TC except it is in 5.56 and has a suppressor. It is also a joy to shoot and very accurate.

Sounds like an excellent longarm.

Happens to be the only official HK rifle that I own too. :ROFLMAO:

But I would like an unmodified SL8.

A soon-to-be classic.

Alright, I’ll weigh in.

I own a lot of vintage ”military style” arms from the glory days before the 1989 import ban, and I’d once intended to collect every NATO member and Western nation rifle from the Cold War. I have good examples of almost all, including variants, but the rifle that I still seem to focus on is the Hk91/G3. By far it’s the rifle I have the most spares and ‘Dress up’ gear to accessorize it.

The reasoning for this is because the ones I own have maybe failed twice in thirty years and both of them were ammunition related. I wish I’d saved the last cartridge that failed to feed in my Hk91 but I tossed it, and that was long ago. I’m unsure what caused that cartridge failure, but I released the bolt and my Hk91 mashed the round like an accordion against the trunnion face and also bent it sideways. Never had that failure again.

By comparison, I own a very fine and rare Polytech AKS-762-2 that I can regularly expect to not entirely live up to the hallowed Kalashnikov reputation for reliability. Anyone who goes by Internet gun lore should be wary of repeated pop culture exaggerations made about various firearms and make an effort to form their own opinions with firsthand experience if they’re able. My expectation is that they’ll potentially find out why nations that adopted a particular military arm chose a different path after having armed their troops with it for a decade or so. I’m looking at you, FN-FAL pattern rifles. I’m also looking at you, those few nations which adopted the 5.56mm round in a Kalashnikov-based rifle.

Though the G3 has a very 1950s manual of arms and ergonomics, and as heavy as it is for what it does, it’s a tank. And highly battle proven. And abuse and neglect resistant over the long haul to the extreme. Totally suitable accuracy, sometimes even capable of amazing (but not always repeatable) shots down range. Judge it by the competitors of its era.

you Know I always thought of you Tony as the Mr Rogers of the gun boards, always warm positive accepting encouraging friendly and informatIive. How appropriate you now have your own site, well done.

Thank you--- I am honored by your comments. 🙂

@copdoc awesome! She is a tack driver!!!
I was looking at the placement of the scope... specifically how far back is the eye relief.... I have always mounted scopes a little bit more forward.
Just curious...
Thanks,
M.
