Correct Grip?

I agree with @AGG that the HK VFG looks most "correct" on a UMP (or clone). The first picture of a UMP I ever saw, it was actually wearing a Magpul VFG (like in my link below). So that became "correct" in my mind. I'll tell you thought, before investing in a HK VFG (there are clones of that too) - if you have not used one - I would recommend a cheaper option first to ensure you actually like using a VFG with a UMP. I found the recoil impulse to be such that the VFG didn't allow me optimal control of the gun. I ended up removing it, removing all the rails and gripping the forend of the gun similar to an AR. I found I could not only control the recoil impulse better than before, but I could direct the gun to the next target faster than with the VFG. All that said, the VFG looks cooler!

The way I use a VFG is to grip the forend of the weapon and the vert grip. My thumb is on top of the forend, almost like a “C” type grip or using an angled grip but with my wrist in a more neutral position. This provides me the greatest control. Even with pretty large hands, I don’t need a long VFG and for that reason I’ve always found the HK ones to be goofy long. I use the magpul RVG.

Gripping the vertical with my whole hand, thumb wrapped around it, has never felt natural and I don’t feel as connected to the gun. I only do it if heat demands.

I also use the ACR stock and a stock block, though, so clearly I’m much less concerned with what looks the most HK than I am with what works the best. It’s not like the UMP is all that attractive a weapon anyway. I mean come on...it’s no MP5.

I haven't shot it this way yet but it feels fine while I'm running around the house with it, taking cover behind the couch, going "pew pew pew".

To the contrary--- with new equipment, practice drills are fundamental. :)

I'm taking a break from range time for a while. Ammo prices are so insane, I'm just taking it easy.

I've been waiting almost 5 months for a eFiled form 1. When it comes in I'm going to take the new gun and that G/S out but it will probably only be for 50 rounds each.
 
I'm rolling the kac grip. If it's not a high end name brand , it won't add inches to you manhood. Think about that before you try a magpul
