HP Noob. Just bought a MP5 kit. Now what....

Thank you for those pics. I finally think I understand the relationship between the two.
So the shelf gets added by the builder to the new receiver?
Correct. Typically it is a wrap around shelf that covers the second pin hole on the magazine well. Your trigger pack will likely need further modification to accommodate that type shelf, but that is a conversation you will need to have with your builder.

Thanks for the excellent pics! Saved copies for future reference!

Nehalem Man, by any chance do you have a pic of the Zenith FA carrier block they installed?

I really wish that HK had done the new SP5 & SP5K PDW with a 2-pin lower + trigger pack block like MKE/Zenith did.

What do they look like?

Thanks for the pics!! It's interesting to see that MKE/Zenith welded in a machined block vs HK welding in a thin piece of press formed steel. I read that at one point Zenith was removing the carrier block for customers until the ATF told them to stop. Without looking it up, can't remember if they were adding a wrap around shelf or not when they removed the carrier block. Either way, if you wanted to use a Zenith for a sear host using a registered pack, a modified carrier with an add in sear trip like TSC is doing would be the way to go I guess. I've been searching for pics of a mod'd carrier block to see how the add-in sear trip piece gets fastened to the carrier but no luck so far.....

I keep hearing of a modified carrier so that guys can run the Zeniths as a sear host, but it is apparently a closely guarded secret because It has been impossible to find a pic of what is being manufactured.

As for removal of the carrier block, I believe Zenith has posted either what they learned from the BATF or perhaps even the actual BATF letter on the subject.

Edit......here is a link to the Zenith FAQ page that answers many questions.

On another HK forum, someone posted a question about what was needed to convert an SP5 for use with a Flemming sear. The TSC semi-to-FA sear trip that can be installed to the modded semi-auto carrier while its in the receiver was brought up. Without any accompanying text, the final person to comment posted the two following pictures. One is a cut trigger box (cut to fit the shelf on an SP5?) and the other is the bottom of a carrier that looks modded with a sear trip piece and bottom plate (with a screw hole for attachment?). Def not a standard carrier FA carrier bottom so I'm guessing its a semi-to-FA modded carrier with removable trip....

Interesting. I know that this time last year there was a raging debate over the legality of removing the receiver block on the SP-5 to make it sear ready. Never heard the resolution of that debate or if BATF ever gave any guidance. That pic of the modified carrier might give a hint to the outcome of that debate.

Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately?) I don't have to worry about such thinks since I don't have $30K sitting around that I'm willing to spend on a happy switch.
