This sucks. I've got to start backing stuff up on my external hard-drive.
I dont game or anything but I've had it for about ten years, it has probably lived longer than it was supposed to.
If I turn it off it takes about an hour for it to settle down after I restart it. It stays locked up.
Dammit.

yeah, time for a new computer..........couple years ago I done went and 'bout me one of them thar fancy do-dad compoter that be all in one ; screen, HD, CD and put my COMPAQ PRESARIO with WINDOWS 97 and monitor in the basement :D

I assume I would have to buy the latest version of Windows again? Does a factory reset just nuke everything?

Yes and No, Your windows is safe and will boot back up but you will lose all programs that did not come installed originally and all personal files

Well it beats buying a new computer.
I've got 10 days of Stay-Cation coming up next week. This sound like it could kill a couple days.
Thanks.

No Worries, Its not a long process may be 1-2 hours other than the back up. Just google your computer and how get it reset. Also you could just try to defragment your hard drive first see if that helps

Actually ,I just went through this. Make a copy of the entire drive and run it virtually. This way you'll have a copy and if it ever has another issue just copy and paste the virtual file and you're right back up.

I am tech-challenged. You lost me at "Make a copy of the entire drive and run it virtually".

Don't bother trying to explain it. My standard computer repair technique is Control Alt Delete. If that doesn't fix it I call my daughter who scolds me for (a.) not owning an Apple, and (b.) still owning a desktop computer.

I'd stay as basic and old-school as possible. Do what you can to maintain your system. I'm Windows 7.

Well I did it.

The "reset' ran for 7 hours but it's still working so I must not have jacked it up too badly.
I did a complete wipeout, had two icons on the desktop when it rebooted!

I do it every 1-2 years depending on how my computer is running. I bought a super high end Sager laptop about 8 years ago. fastest everything, solid state drives and dual video cards. I will never do that again, cost more than any gun I have ever bought
