What is the deal with Rolex?

Went to several AD's and EVERYONE seems to have the same watches in stock for display - but not for sale.

yeah, I had to turn my US issue watch back to the supply room when I retired 27 years ago......and haven't worn one since, but that's OK since I never needed to be anywhere on time. :). and it feels gooooooood :D

my philosophy is, I'll get there when I get there

I saw advertised a 2023 Rolex DeepSea Titanium 50mm that caught my eye so I thought I would have a look - but no luck yet..

Window shopping is a hobby with Rolex watches. Pre pandemic you might meet an AD that isn't a prick and actually offer you something they have hiding in the back room.

I'd be the wrong guy to advise you on this, I am still wearing the same Seiko Diver 6309-7040 I bought in 1978 at the PX in West Berlin. It had two trips to COSERV in 89 and 96 to have a fractured hairspring replaced due to me doing random hand conditioning while wearing it. I learned my lesson the second time and don't do the left anymore. Much. I had it completely refurb'ed to as new condition about 5 years back by Watchworx t a cost of about $600. Well worth it. A classic look with either a link or the original rubber band. IF I felt the need to upgrade, it would be to an Omega Sea Master at roughly half the cost of a Rolex.

My FIL in Germany has a Rolex. When I was working in the Middle East, I bought him an identical fake. Guess which one spent more time in the shop....

Mine was a 10th anniversary gift from my first wife * in ‘88. Took it on two deployments on ship banging it into steel bulkheads in rough seas.
Then, got hit hard by a drunk driver while on my Harley in 2005. The watch ran fine, but when I took it in for service in 2012, we found that the mounting towers that hold it to the mechanism were all sheared off and the face was free floating, held in place by the hands. Still kept time. 34 years later, still running.

Speaking of, when I was a brand new Ensign on my 1st ship, we stopped in Naples. I went to the AFSOUTH (NATO) exchange and they had the all gold Submariner for $1400. Almost bought it, then thought that some guy would take it off me in an alley in some of the $hitty ports we visited. Besides, that was a month and a half’s pay, and I was saving up for a wedding.

* Footnote: still married to 1st wife and she gets pissed off every time I refer to her as that. 🥴 Like the lawyers say: truth is an affirmative defense!

The Rolex market is stupid right now, trillions in money printing around the globe.

Like housing and used cars, the market is crazy inflated.
