Jeezus, Saigon Sam’s. That’s a blast from the past! I bought a squad stove there when we couldn’t get one through our battalion supply at 3/10. I ran a 7 man Naval Gunfire team deployed with 2/8 in ‘81. We spread load the stove, 1 bottle fuel each for 2 men, about 3 lbs of coffee, a coffee pot with filters, 1 guy with a pound of bagged sugar and the last guy with a big ass jar of dry creamer.

We were known as the best coffee in the BLT, brewed fresh at sunrise cowboy style and filtered every morning when ashore on the OP. We’d get the BN CO; LT.Col Zinni to come up in his Jeep on the hill for a cuppa every day or so, and if we got delayed ashore, could run the stove on MOGAS.

Good times!

Asking a guy if he’s got too many magazines is the reverse of asking a pilot if he’s got too much fuel.

Correct Pilot Response: The only time a pilot’s got too much fuel is when he’s on fire!

Yeah I was back in the states when I bumped into a fellow 1371 that was stationed at 9th ESB and told me they were shutting down the 9th thunder chickens they were impressive when they would do their Battalion run all in Red battalion shirts like a river of red running the base.

I also think their was a reason back then as well I went over their to visit one of my bros that I graduated Combat Engineer school with back at Courthouse bay anyway when I got thier the whole battalion was locked down confined to barracks and I mean confined to their rooms. So I check in with the duty and the first thing I noticed is they are cleaning everyone just cleaning everything bathrooms , living quarters, lounges you name it they were cleaning on a Saturday? So the duty comes down with my friend we walk like 5ft and he says I cant go any further also I am not allowed here for the time being and he isnt allowed out of the barracks unless its work hours or getting food in that case when getting a meal they have to sign out with the duty NCO and be escorted by their platoon nco. So I we start talking low he tells me that we are restricted to duty, barracks and work due two some guys in the battalion F#cked up!
I said what do you mean? So he says a few guys took the new guy to club America in Kinville last night got him drunk on MOJO and Kamakazi drinks when he passed out in his room the M-nu his balls and A-hole then you kinda get the rest so we did an about face headed back to 3rd CEB got back and we just shook our heads like holy crap they F#cked up! Soooooo the next day we had a emergency Battalion formation and I will never forget Lt Col Balls speach how we are barred from going over to 9th ESB PERIOD none of my Marines will be anywhere near 9th Esb or disciplinary actions will be swift and I will wipe you off the face of the earth caught over their. Anyway true story those guys went thru holy hell with NIS investigations battalion games played 24x7 for the rest of my buddies stay their sucked for him.

Damn,
When I was stationed at Hansen, when we would come back on base from a night out in K'ville, there were two red lines on the sidewalk coming into the base at the main gate that were 20' apart. The reason for these two lines were when you came back on base, you had to walk from one line to the other withOUT help from your buddies. That was the sobriety check method. If you couldn't walk unassisted between the lines, you ended up in the "drunk tank" and had to have your company first shirt come to bail you out. I had to get bailed out only once and that was because of the MoJo that kicked my ass that night!
I had some buddies that were with the 9th Engineers, Bridge Platoon. We partied all the time together at both units. On some weekends, the guys at the 9th ESB would set up their stereos outside their barracks and would rock the whole base! Times have changed. That's me at Hansen in 1977.D9C5A60D-4E44-4A58-A505-17393821720B.jpeg

Yeah it got bad their had to tell my buddy that I couldn't hang over their and yes as far as I can remember those red lines were thier now if you were good and you had a buddy with you they would give you a courtesy ride back to barracks if you were bad in the tank you went and the next morning they would hand you the infamous pink slip that meant you got to see the Battalion Cmdr monday morning you might as well throw your rank in the trash lol. I can also say it wasnt uncommon to see guys passed out in the up ground sewer culverts or and I actually saw this as a voluntold Camp guard we had to cut this guy off the fence yup 10ft in the air passed out half on each side straddle on barbed wire. I can still remember calling the AOD to come up to the front fence line with a ladder and wire cutters. I almost laughed seeing the AOD come up in the little white van and the SSGT getting out and say "Just WTF over?" Then it took us 20 mins to cut him free pick him up from the outside and inside fence lines true story cant make that one up.
