G3K Build?

Sorry buddy I get a little emotional when thinking about Eric in the good old days back when it wasn't all about money and it was more about the community and the fun between all of us meeting up for shoots and building new never thought of firearms in roller locks

It's funny after 20 Is plus years of manufacturing You meet some of the best guys and some of the legends like bill Fleming Terry Dyer Curtis Higgins . Ralph senior with RDTS.
Is a lot of good guys Is heck me and eric actually sent RDTS one of our 51 k's for him to see how they work so he could figure out how to build them. It's been a long ride and I'll keep going as long as I Can and try to carry on their memories with me..

I hear ya. We never really did much building together, he helped me with a few things building wise. I started trying my hand at it after he passed. I'm using his tig welder to do it :) His son must have been about 8. I used to be into building AK's. I asked Eric if I could teach HasHair to build an AK. He said sure, we did it in his garage. Eric just sat back and smiled. and took these pictures. I took the rifle home when we where done. Parked and painted it. Then gave it to HasHair

sorry for the thread hijack
I actually enjoyed the way this thread went. I learned a lot about the flats AND some touching stories filled with emotions and feel good moments!
@Ghilliebear I know who will be doing a G3 build for me now! Give me a few months to get caught up with all my purchases and I will be in touch!

Agreed--- members are allowed to expand in different directions here. ;)

I miss Eric something terrible. I'm still close to his family, I was texting with his son last night. You are correct, his is a fixed barrel. I knew his was one of the first if not the first. That's why I asked if you knew
Me two.
I met nohair back in '97-'98 back when he HAD HAIR and a Toyota with 40"
After a Shoot at TNW's, we got to talking and he ask if I wanted to shoot his 51k

Was half was through one of his 40 rounders when the painful reality was
I forgot to put EARS on

You've defiantly known Eric longer than I. You and I are about the only ones that still keep in touch with the family. You are a good man and a good friend.

Here's another funny Eric story that has nothing to do with guns. I call him up and ask him if the family would like to go fishing for the weekend at the coast. I tell him I have a place for us to stay. He asks, do you really think we will catch anything? he and his son had never caught a fish over like 6". I said the odds are really good we will. He tells his wife that we have a rustic cabin to stay in. She and his daughter weren't interested. Eric and his son decided they'd like to go. They were glad they went

So there was an email from RCM in my inbox this morning.
They have barrel blanks inbound but it will be several weeks before they can get to them.
Hope they're not just yanking my chain. It WILL be worth the wait.

Receiver arrives tomorrow, I have all my other parts.

Hey Jeff!

So I have a question for you. I have an idea about adapting my G3 cocking tube for use on a K but I need some info. I have doctored up a picture for ease of explanation.

My idea hinges on the differences between a standard cocking tube and a K tube. Is the only difference between the tubes found in the length of the "nose" section? Section A remains the same? Including the forward "stop" location?

The standard tube is about 13.2 inches long, a K tube is allegedly 11 inches long. My idea is to cut 2.2 inches out of the constant (non-tapered) diameter section of the nose. Measure the I.D., and have a bushing made to fit with a tolerance of say, .001 - .003. The bushing would ensure the sections maintain the same centerline. Then I would find a guy who is good with a Tig and have the sections welded together.

Whaddya think?

I do believe Jeff is the guy that makes the G3K cocking tubes for RTG. I bet he can handle it ;)

Yes, he is, or was. They haven't placed an order with him for any more and he said setting up to build just one is cost prohibitive.

Here are some reference pictures of my factory G3K barrel and cocking tube.

First roller locked gun I ever built was on one of those bent (but not welded) Gewehr Werks receivers when he was blowing them out for like $50

Took a little massaging, but wound up being a completely functional and reliable gun, even being bubble-gum'd together with a stick welder. Were there issues with these I'm not aware of?

They can't be any worse than Todd's old flats.

My GW ghetto CETME build is probably over 1K now without a single hiccup.
